Nurturing The Mother: A New Era

Today’s conversation is a much needed conversation.

There is a lack in our society, where mothers are wearing so many hats and attempting to keep up with all the societal pressures.

Mother is a full time job. Studies have shown that if “mother” was a paid job, she would earn on average over $180,000 per year.

The hats that she wears consisting of nurse, maid, chef, chauffeur, teacher, therapist, and the list goes on. On top of her already many other hats she may wear of wife, daughter, employee, sister, aunt, friend, etc.

She is told to question her own ability, yet if she asks for help she is deemed weak and incapable.

She is told to work as if she has no children and mother as if she has no job.

If she is a stay at home mom, she is deemed lazy.

If she is a working mom, she is deemed a mother who doesn’t care about her children.

If she homeschools her children and heals holistically, she is deemed as crazy in society.

If she sends her children to public school and visits the doctor on a regular basis, she is deemed as a mother who does not care about the system.

If she chooses to gentle parent and co-sleep, she is deemed a push over.

I could go on and on.

There are so many biases and criticisms placed on mothers, it is honestly a bit sickening.

As a mother myself, I have experienced countless harsh criticism for the way I want to raise our children.

However, this is what I truly want to stress.

As a collective, we must help each other create our village. Our village filled with those who support our views, whether they disagree or not. Our village we can rely on.

Studies have proven that with no village or support, mothers (and even fathers) are more likely to experience postpartum depression, and with no village or support, children are more likely to get sick frequently.

Nurturing the mother goes beyond helping mama with baby so she can fold laundry, wash the dishes, take a shower or run errands alone. It goes to washing the dishes for her, sweeping the floors for her, getting her a cup of tea, folding the clothes for her, bringing her and her family a home-cooked meal. All without asking if she needs help, and with zero expectations of receiving anything in return. She may say no to your gesture, however she is crumbling on the inside desperately wanting to say yes but not wanting to seem lazy or incapable. Most importantly, nurturing the mother means giving her space to feel valid in her emotions, to be a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on.

Nurturing the mother is basic need for a mother to have her village. A village to be fully accepted. A village to be fully supported. A village to be fully encouraged in her decisions for her family.

As a mother, I have realized that if I want my village, I* have to be the one to actively create and build it. That is why NWC exists- to build the village FOR mothers, to bridge the gap in prenatal and postpartum holistic care and support.

And as I continue to build and create my own village, I am in turn continuing to build and create the village for YOU. I am proud to announce that NWC is expanding, in beautiful ways and with beautiful souls. An expansion I am incredibly excited about and honored to bring to you!

We are entering a new era for nurturing mothers and families as a whole. More and more mothers and families are wanting a nurturing, holistic community. Now it’s time we end the criticism and lovingly help her create her safe, supportive village! The more mothers I talk to and who enter our world, the more I am seeing this change, the ending of modern societal thinking and the welcoming of old ancestral traditions- herbal medicine, homemaking, homesteading, wild schooling, and village support. It is a beautiful thing to witness as many mothers and families are challenging these useless modern way of living.

Kailee
